cerebus first half

This is the preliminary drawing Dave had done on tracing paper for a boxed set of the first six Cerebus trade paperbacks. The plan had been to box and sell the first half of the story. This design would have been the wrap-around cover of the box showing Cerebus through each book in the series. It was never used. We never did it.

Matthew found this beat-up, wrinkled, slightly torn example of an idea that never happened and he initially commissioned me to glue the tracing paper onto a board, fill in the background, ink the whole thing, and then add tone to Cerebus. This proved unworkable with the paper in such bad shape.

My idea was to transfer those Cerebuses onto illustration board, fill in the background and ink the whole thing. Matthew wasn't prepared to spend that much and just wanted me to add something to Dave's original design. I decided to pencil the backgrounds and shade in the Cerebuses on a seperate sheet of tracing paper.

Matthew then asked me to ink Dave’s Cerebuses on the original tracing paper. He plans on sandwiching the two sheets under glass in a frame. This constitutes one of the very few, if not the only time, I've inked Dave’s pencils.

If you put the two together, with mine on top, you get something like this:

On the computer, I superimposed the inks on top and this is the end result.

I'm considering transferring the whole thing onto illustration board, inking it and making prints. Image size is 8" x 21". I'll have to look into how much they'll be to print up. If anyone is interested in purchasing a copy, contact me at gerzmail@yahoo.ca
